Dear Mr. Thompson,

Congratulations on your appointment. There are many people like me who are hoping that you can turn the many agencies under the department of Health and Human Services from serving special interests to serving primarily the public interest. The people I am thinking of are the so-called Health Freedom fighters who are fighting any restrictions on low-cost vitamins and other nutrients.

Of utmost importance is the claim made by one of Americas greatest scientists that heart disease, the number one killer which the American Heart Association estimates costs the US economy 326 billion in medical costs, lost wages, etc. can be eradicated by a simple nutrient therapy that we estimate would cost approximately 200 million annually. Let me repeat. Linus Pauling made the claim shortly before he died on video and in printed material the cardiovascular disease can now be controlled or even cured. This claim, if verified, has the potential of saving our economy some $326 billion in the year 2001. And it could happen as quickly as that.

We of course notified Donna Shellala and her various agencies, to no avail.

We wrote a comprehensive grant proposal to the National Institute of Health Office of Alternative Medicine that would have fairly evaluated the Pauling claim. No pharmaceutical company has an interest in funding such a study. Only the people, through their Government, have an interest in showing that low cost, readily available nutrients, in sufficient amounts, can cure heart disease. However, the NIH turned us down - twice. As soon as we can, we plan to resubmit our study proposal to the NIH now that it is under "new management." We have the doctors, albeit with an alternative bent, who are willing to conduct the study.

Regarding the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), perhaps you will consider dividing the agency into two separate entities? Most people think that a Food Safety function is wise. Perhaps these people can be moved into the Agriculture department? That would leave a Federal Drug Administration whose focus could be entirely on prescription drugs. This would help keep their hands off foods, e.g. vitamins, amino acids and other nutrients that are required for life in small amounts, but may be therapeutic for some people in much larger amounts.

Yours Truly,
